The South Berkshires is a perfect winter destination for skiers from New York, New Jersey, and all over New England. While our mountains aren’t the biggest compared to places like Vermont or New Hampshire, our culture, arts, dining, and overall charm put us over the top as a must-visit spot for a weekend away. The area delivers that cozy, small-town winter energy without sacrificing good food, great drinks, and plenty of things to do off the slopes.

The Southern Berkshires region has two fantastic options for skiers and snowboarders looking to enjoy a day or weekend on the mountain. Both Butternut and Catamount are only about 15 minutes from the front door of Wilder House and offer a diverse range of terrain for skiers of all levels. So which one is best for you?

Let’s take a look:

Catamount Mountain Resort

Nestled between Hillsdale, NY and Egremont, MA, Catamount has created a ski resort experience that goes well beyond just the snow. With multiple restaurants and bars onsite, you can truly spend an entire day here, alternating between long ski runs and sipping cocktails or hot chocolate by the fire. If your idea of a perfect ski day includes equal parts skiing and relaxing, Catamount may be the better fit for your style.

But it’s not just a cozy place to drink and be merry. Catamount offers terrain that many skiers—including me—find to be more challenging than what Butternut provides. The trails are longer, steeper, and better suited for advanced or thrill-seeking skiers who want to push themselves a bit. The mountain’s layout also gives more opportunities to explore different faces and keep each run feeling fresh.

Another major benefit is night skiing, which opens up more flexibility for your schedule. Whether you’re arriving late, fitting in a few quick turns after work, or simply prefer the novelty of skiing under the lights, Catamount gives you that option.

Ski Butternut

Butternut advertises itself as an affordable ski area for families, and in this regard it truly delivers. Lift ticket prices are among the most reasonable in the region, and the majority of the mountain’s runs are ideal for novice-to-intermediate skiers. The team here works hard to keep the mountain well-groomed, safe, and reliably open regardless of weather fluctuations—something longtime visitors appreciate.

In terms of terrain, Butternut offers slightly less diversity than Catamount. Both have green, blue, and black trails, but the black runs at Butternut are generally shorter and less intense, making them approachable for those just starting to explore steeper terrain. For families or newer skiers who want to build confidence without being overwhelmed, this can be a real advantage.

Food and beverage options at Butternut are simpler and more streamlined than what you’ll find at Catamount. The cafeteria-style setup offers grab-and-go classics—burgers, hot dogs, pizza—plus beer and wine. No craft cocktails here; the energy is very much “no frills, get on the lift, and cram as many runs in as possible.” If your perfect day is focused squarely on skiing rather than lounging, Butternut shines.

One of Butternut’s biggest perks is its proximity to Great Barrington. When the mountain closes, you can head straight downtown to explore the shops, cafés, and restaurants that make Great Barrington such a beloved local destination.

Agriculture is key to life in the southern Berkshires, and if you’re coming into the region from the concrete jungle of an urban area, you’ll want to be sure to get some quality time on one of our beautiful farms. Visiting a local farm is a great way to enhance the experience of staying in Wilder House’s 1800’s farm house.

Here are a few of our absolute favorite spots that are worth adding to your itinerary.

High Lawn Farm, Lee MA: Classic Berkshire Charm

If you're after that quintessential New England farm experience, High Lawn Farm in Lee delivers. This isn't just any dairy farm; it's a historic spot set on a property with truly stunning, panoramic views of the Southern Berkshires. You can spend some time visiting with the dairy cows, even pet a calf or two, which is always a highlight. Then, head inside to taste their homemade ice creams and cheeses – seriously, don't skip this part. Afterward, their beautiful picnic area is the perfect place to kick back, soak up the sun, and appreciate the rich agricultural heritage that defines this region.

Taft Farms, Great Barrington: More Than Just a Farm Stand

When you're looking for a place that offers a little bit of everything, Taft Farms in Great Barrington fits the bill. It's truly a unique spot, blending a nursery, a farm store, and a sandwich shop, all with a delightful hint of a petting zoo thrown in for good measure. During the summer, you absolutely have to grab some of their sweet corn – it's legendary around here – along with whatever other farm-fresh vegetables catch your eye. Freund's Farm, East Canaan CT: Your Go-To for Farm Fresh Takeout

Just about a ten-minute drive south from the Wilder house, you'll find Freund’s Farm in East Canaan, CT. This little farm stand is a personal favorite for stocking up. They have fantastic grab-and-go food like chicken pot pies and quiches, which are perfect for an easy dinner after a day of exploring. You'll also find a large selection of cheeses, meats, and other groceries. It’s an ideal last stop on your way out of the Berkshires to bring some fresh produce and local goodies home with you. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, making it a pleasant experience every time.

Dandelion Hill Farms, Sheffield, MA: Unique & Biodynamic

For something a bit different, head over to Dandelion Hill Farms right here in Sheffield. This is a working goat farm, and they offer their own goat cheeses and milks, which are excellent. You'll also find homegrown herbs and other vegetables. What makes them particularly interesting is their commitment to biodynamic farming practices. It's a unique approach in the region and worth checking out if you're interested in sustainable agriculture.

Little Orchard Cidery, Hillsdale NY: Relaxed Afternoon Sips

When you're ready for a more laid-back afternoon, head across the border into New York for Little Orchard Cidery in Hillsdale. Set in the shade of apple trees, this place has a wonderfully relaxed vibe that reminds me of some of the great wineries I've visited out in California. They offer a wide selection of ciders and hard ciders. Plus, they often host special events, including live music and food trucks, making it a great spot to unwind and enjoy the local scene.

Windy Hill Farms, Great Barrington: A Fall Wonderland

Finally, don't miss Windy Hill Farms in Great Barrington, conveniently located on Route 7 between Great Barrington and Stockbridge. This place truly offers a diverse agricultural experience. You'll find an apple orchard, a blueberry field, and a specialty ornamental nursery. They also have a retail garden center, a fantastic Holiday Shop, and even a full-service landscape department. Depending on the time of year, you can pick your own apples or enjoy other seasonal activities. It’s an all-in-one farm experience!

Prepare your taste buds for a treat at No Comply ! This casual spot in Great Barrington might feel laid-back with it's punk rock and vintage skateboard art, but its food packs a seriously big punch. Chef Steve Browning's menu is always a delightful surprise, constantly changing and always amazing. With unique flavors from around the world, No Comply is our go-to for dishes that expand your palate and leave you wanting more!

Blackberry River Bistro - Canaan, CT (A quick 7 minutes from Wilder House)

Tucked away on a corner in Canaan, Connecticut, you'll find the charming Blackberry River Bistro . While it's small, this bistro truly punches above its weight in food quality. We especially adore Audrey's incredible desserts and their always-changing pasta of the week!

Hy’s Fried - South Egremont (Only 10 minutes from Wilder House)

This vintage clubhouse, transformed into a lively bar and restaurant, serves up some of the best fried chicken north of the Mason-Dixon line. Newly reopened, Cantina delivers amazing cocktails and a fresh, farm-to-table menu sourced locally from Mill River Farm. We especially love heading there on Taco Tuesdays for mouth-watering tacos and refreshing margaritas – it's a weekly tradition you won't want to miss!

No. 10 - Great Barrington (Just 10 minutes from Wilder House)

No. 10 in Great Barrington is another exceptional upscale steakhouse that consistently delivers incredible food. A guest once told me No. 10 is the best restaurant in America, and I'd say it's certainly in the running! If you're celebrating a major milestone or simply enjoying a romantic weekend, make sure you add No. 10 to your must-visit list. It also has the rare added benefit of being open seven days a week, which is a real gem in our region! Say hi to Jon at the bar (he's a friend of mine!)

Once Upon a Table - Stockbridge (About 20 minutes from Wilder House!)

Last but certainly not least, Once Upon a Table in Stockbridge is another tiny, hidden gem tucked away in an alley downtown. This charming spot consistently creates a warm and inviting environment with a menu that gracefully ranges from American classics to French and Italian influences. It's one of our absolute go-tos for a quiet, intimate date night that feels truly special.

Announcing our first Parlor Show at Wilder House Berkshires: Clem Snide

When I bought the Wilder House in 2023, one of my dreams was that one day, our inn would host unique musical experiences for our guests and community. Today, I’m excited to announce that this vision will come to life on Friday, May 16th when we host Clem Snide - the longtime project of celebrated Americana songwriter Eef Barzelay.

Clem Snide first emerged from Boston as a three-piece in the early 1990s, and has become a cult and critical favorite, with NPR describing Eef as “the most underrated songwriter in the business today, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor.”

I first saw Clem Snide in Baltimore in 2001 when they were opening for Ben Folds. I was sixteen years old, and their albums “The Ghosts of Fashion” and “End of Love” became staples for me in my formative teenage years. I’m beyond excited that over 20 years later, I get to present Eef solo in our living room - as our inaugural concert in a series I’m calling Wilder House Parlor Shows.

Space for this event is very limited. In addition to Wilder House Guests, We have room for 20 people from our community. All Wilder House Guests will receive complimentary admission.

With several rooms still available, this show is a great chance to turn the concert into an unforgettable trip to the Berkshires!

Our favorite short hikes in the South Berkshires

Your perfect before-lunch walk in the woods

I’ve loved being in the woods since I was a little kid. I grew up near a hundred-acre patch of woods with creeks, rocky outcroppings, and beautiful meadows, and every day I couldn’t wait to stroll through the beauty and tranquility of the forest.

Now that I run a bed and breakfast in the Berkshires, I don’t have a lot of time for long hikes. Fortunately, we have amazing short hikes within minutes of the Wilder House in Sheffield. Here are a few of my favorites.

1. Race Brook Trail to Upper Race Falls (7 minutes from Wilder House)

This ascending hike takes you from Undermountain Rd (Rt 41) in Sheffield uphill to Race Falls, an impressive 3-tiered waterfall that really roars in the spring and early summer. The trail offers an eastward view over the South Berkshires (though it’s best to view when the foliage is thin). It’s just about 3 miles roundtrip from the parking lot to the falls and back. But if you’re really feeling adventurous, you can continue uphill to the Appalachian trail, and extend the hike for miles in the Taconic Range on Mount Washington.

2. Jug End State Preservation (15 minutes from Wilder House)

Until the 1980s, Jug End was a popular destination for skiing with miles of cross-country trails and a 4-season hotel and resort. Today, it’s nature preserve with a three-mile loop trail that includes forest, stream, and meadow. While the Berkshires are known for being quiet, Jug End is in an especially sparse part of Berkshire County, making this an awesome place to be alone with your thoughts while you hike.

3. Bartholomews Cobble Reservation (8 minutes from Wilder House)

Bartholomews Cobble is part of the Trustees of Reservations system, meaning it’s been preserved for its historical significance and natural beauty. This gentle trail system offers sweeping views of the Taconic Ridge and incredible birding in a unique meadow ecosystem.

4. Goodnow Preserve (16 minutes from Wilder House)

Goodnow preserve is a beautiful park in the community of Mill River, with a 2.5 mile loop trail partially along the clear waters of the Konkapot River. With rolling hills, historic stone walls and the ruins of an old Mill, Goodnow is a true gem to our east. While you’re here, swing by the Southfield Store for lunch or pick up some locally curated snacks from the Mill River General Store .

5. Roger and Virginia Drury Preserve (4 minutes from Wilder House)

The Roger and Virginia Drury Preserve in Sheffield offers a 2.5-mile round-trip hike through a lowland forest rich in wildlife. The Drury Trail leads to Schenob Brook, providing views of Mount Race and opportunities for birdwatching, with sightings of herons and kingfishers. The preserve is home to coyotes, bobcats, and turkeys, and snowshoeing in winter allows visitors to track animal footprints across the virgin snow.
